WhatsApp QR code generator
One scan opens a chat with your business on WhatsApp — no saving a number, no switching apps to type it in. Free to design, printed as a counter stand or window sign that works around the clock.
What is a WhatsApp QR code
A WhatsApp QR code encodes a wa.me link — WhatsApp's own official short-link format (https://wa.me/15551234567) that opens a chat with that number directly, in the app if it's installed or in WhatsApp Web otherwise. It works exactly the same for a personal number or a WhatsApp Business account.
Get your WhatsApp link
Two ways to get a wa.me link:
- WhatsApp Business app — go to Settings → Business tools → Short link, and the app generates it for you.
- Build it manually — use
https://wa.me/followed by your full number in international format, no+, no spaces or dashes. For example, a US number (212) 555-0100 becomeshttps://wa.me/12125550100.
Optionally, prefill a message so customers don't start from a blank chat: add ?text= followed by a URL-encoded message, for example https://wa.me/12125550100?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20ask%20about...
Design and print
Step 1 — Paste your wa.me link
Open qr3dmaker.com and paste the link into the field. The QR updates as you type.
Step 2 — Pick colors and object type
WhatsApp's own green and white is an instantly recognizable pairing, though matching your brand colors works fine too — the icon itself, not the color, is what customers associate with chat. Choose a desk stand for a counter, a wall plaque for a storefront window, or a keychain for staff on the move.
Step 3 — Print and display it
Download the 3MF (or STL for older printers) and print with default settings — no supports needed. Place it wherever a customer already looks: the register, the front window, a delivery vehicle.
Where businesses use it
- Storefront window sticker or plaque — "Message us" for after-hours questions, no phone call needed.
- Restaurant table stand — reservations, orders or questions via chat instead of a call that puts someone on hold.
- Trade show booth — instant lead capture straight into a chat instead of a paper form nobody follows up on.
- Delivery or service vehicles — customers message directly for updates, no dispatch line.
Writing a prefilled message that actually gets answered
A prefilled message removes the "what do I say?" hesitation, and it tells you what the customer wants before you reply. Keep it short, specific and written in the first person: "Hi, I'd like to book a table for tonight" converts better than a generic "Hello". Remember that the text has to be URL-encoded inside the link: a space becomes %20, an apostrophe %27, a line break %0A and a question mark %3F.
A useful trick is to print a different QR for each place and give each one its own prefilled text, for example "Hi, I'm at table 4" or "Hi, I saw your window sign". The wa.me link does not report scan counts, but the first message of every chat tells you which sign it came from.
Size, distance and placement
A reliable rule of thumb for any QR code is a scanning distance of about ten times the width of the code: a 4 cm code scans comfortably from around 40 cm, which suits a counter or a table, while a window sign read from a sidewalk needs to be much larger. Keep the code at eye level, away from glare and reflections, and leave a blank margin around it (the "quiet zone") so the camera can find its edges. A 3D printed plaque with a raised, two-color code is easy to read in dim restaurants and shop windows because the relief adds shadow on top of the color contrast.
Privacy and etiquette
- The number is visible to everyone who scans. Use a business number or a WhatsApp Business account, not your personal line.
- Set expectations. In WhatsApp Business you can configure opening hours, a greeting message and an away message, so a scan at 11 pm does not feel ignored.
- Do not message people who have not written first. The QR starts the conversation from the customer's side, which is exactly why it is well received.
Test before you print
Open the wa.me link in a normal browser first and confirm it opens the right chat with the right prefilled text. After printing, scan the object with at least two different phones (ideally one iPhone and one Android) using the built-in camera app. WhatsApp links need an internet connection to open, so check the spot where the sign will hang has mobile coverage or guest Wi-Fi.

WhatsApp QR code — FAQ
Does the customer need to save my number first?
No — wa.me opens a chat directly without saving the contact. The number appears in their chat list only after they send a message.
Does this work with WhatsApp Business?
Yes, wa.me links work identically for personal and Business accounts. The Business app just gives you an easier way to generate the short link.
Can I prefill a message?
Yes — append ?text= and a URL-encoded message to the link, for example ?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to.... It shows up in the chat box ready to send, not sent automatically.
Does it work on desktop too?
Yes. wa.me detects the device: on a phone it opens the WhatsApp app, on a desktop browser it opens WhatsApp Web.
Is this against WhatsApp's terms?
No — wa.me is WhatsApp's own official link format, published specifically for this purpose. There's nothing to violate; it's the standard way to share a chat link.
